This hand-carved wooden marionette represents a historical gendarme (četník), a law enforcement officer from the Austro-Hungarian era. Dressed in a white double-breasted coat with red trim, dark trousers, and high boots, he embodies the traditional uniform of his time. His detailed facial features and neatly styled beard add to his authoritative presence. This marionette is a fine example of traditional puppet craftsmanship.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
Josef Allesy (1810-1894), born Gianpiero Alessi, is of Italian descent. He came to Bohemia around 1830 and worked there as a carver and conservator in churches. His marionettes were extremely anatomically elaborated with very good mobility and in the second half of the 19th century they gained extraordinary popularity with many Czech puppeteers.
Everything matched the description. The quality is very on point. It met my full expectations at beyond 100% . Very professional.
It’s adorable and so much fun to play with. My 4 year old loves watching the marionette dance!
